Preparing for Family Law Mediation

Preparation begins with identifying the issues to resolve and the information needed for productive discussions. During the initial consultation, we listen to your concerns, clarify your priorities, and explain how mediation may fit into the broader family law matter.

Before the first session, we help you gather relevant financial documents and identify subjects that may require additional time or sensitivity. We also prepare a pre-mediation submission for the mediator that includes financial spreadsheets and your custody goals.

Preparation may include:

  • Organizing income, asset, debt, and expense information relevant to financial issues.
  • Defining priorities for parenting plans, custody, and visitation.
  • Identifying unresolved questions involving child support, property division, alimony, or post-separation support.
  • Flagging safety concerns, intimidation, or sensitive issues before structured discussions begin.

Structured Discussions Adapted to Your Circumstances

Our approach emphasizes problem-solving rather than relitigating past conflicts. Confidential discussions and structured formats allow the parties to address disputed terms methodically while focusing on the decisions that must be made.

When a case involves safety concerns, intimidation, or a large or complex marital estate, we may recommend virtual sessions, separate arrival times, or addressing certain issues before others.

Parenting disputes can raise concerns beyond financial negotiations. Hilary St. Louis is also a certified parenting coordinator. Parenting coordination helps parents manage recurring disagreements under the terms governing their case.
